This brief outlines the key role of public financial management systems for sustainable road investments.
Roads are the most dominant transport mode in Asia and the Pacific, but they often have insufficient funding for maintenance, jeopardizing sustainability and development goals.
Drawing on data from over 60 ADB-financed road projects, this brief highlights how measures such as road asset management systems, road user charges, road funds, performance-based maintenance, and public–private partnerships can be effectively used for sustaining road infrastructure.
