This webinar will examine the safety of commercial motorcycle use within gig and platform-based economies in Asia and the Pacific.

Motorcycles increasingly carry the deliveries and commercial trips that keep Southeast Asian cities running. When riding is a job, who is responsible for keeping riders safe?

The discussion will explore the intersection of rider welfare, corporate accountability, and road safety outcomes, looking not only at how to better protect commercial riders, but also at who is responsible for ensuring that protection. With app-based delivery and ride-hailing services in many Southeast Asian cities relying heavily on motorcycles, the session is directly relevant to governments, platform operators, and road safety practitioners in the subregion. Participants will gain insights into the roles that public and private actors can play in protecting powered two-wheeler (PTW) riders who ride for a living.

The session is part of Vision Zero on Two Wheels: Data-Driven Solutions and Policies for PTWs, a four-part webinar series organized by the Asia–Pacific Road Safety Observatory, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the World Resources Institute Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. The webinar series examines the data, policies, and interventions needed to protect powered two-wheeler users across Asia and the Pacific. The webinar series is supported by the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific, financed by the Government of Japan through ADB.
