This session will examine requirements for safe journeys to schools and public spaces, and how they support childhood development, gender equity, and healthy lifestyles.
For many children in Asia and the Pacific, the journey to school is the most dangerous part of the day. What would it take to make every route to a classroom or playground safe?
The session will set out safe system requirements for school zones and access to public spaces, drawing on tools such as star rating for schools and gender-responsive transport planning.
Speakers will present country case studies of school-zone initiatives and investment programs from across the region, including examples from the Pacific. Participants will gain practical approaches for designing safer journeys that link road safety to childhood development, equity, and public health.
The session concludes the Road Safety Capacity Building Program webinar series Protecting Lives: Children, Youth and Vulnerable Road Users within the Safe System, which examines child and youth road trauma and replicable measures to protect vulnerable road users across Asia and the Pacific.
