This report reviews the landscape of MSMEs in 26 countries in the region. It aims to support policymakers in promoting MSME development and resilience.
Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) contribute to a growing share of economic output in Asia and the Pacific.
Available data through 2024 from 26 development member countries (DMCs) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) show MSMEs accounted for an average of 99.8% of all enterprises, 67.6% of the workforce, and 38.7% of national economic output. Roughly 72% of MSMEs operate in traditional services like distributive trade. Innovative MSMEs in services or technology-based startups are only a small fraction. MSME manufacturers are also small, averaging about 12% nationally, and they typically involve local handicrafts, small agribusiness, and food processing.
The publication highlights how domestic MSME development strategies could strengthen assistance for innovative service-oriented businesses, small manufacturers, and technology-based startups to foster steady domestic economic growth. It examines financial and non-financial conditions, considers policy interventions at the country and regional level, and looks at progress since the previous edition of the Monitor.
