This webinar will explore how green materials and digital tools can help Central Asia’s roads withstand climate extremes and rising freight demand.
Central Asia’s roads face a demanding future. The region’s continental climate already tests them with temperatures swinging from around −25°C in winter to +45°C in summer. With climate change, parts of the region could experience 10 to 50 additional hot days each year by mid-century. At the same time, freight moving via the Middle Corridor could triple by 2030 to around 11 million tonnes, alongside a targeted 50% reduction in transit times.
This session will explore green material technologies for roads, including recycled and local materials, industrial by-products, alternative binders, and lower-temperature production. It will also examine how artificial intelligence, digital tools, sensors, and data-driven asset management can support road design, construction, monitoring, and maintenance across the region.
In Southeast Asia, where rising heat and growing freight volumes are also pressuring road networks, these materials and tools offer practical options for building roads that can cope with both.
The session is part of ADB's Green Roads Webinar Series, which examines the nature-positive benefits of green roads and highlights their cross-cutting contributions to decarbonization, climate resilience, water management, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, and inclusive growth.
