The selected team will receive $10,000–$20,000 in potential consultancy with ADB to pilot the solution in one or more ADB member countries.

Data scientists, AI specialists, and transport innovators with AI-driven solutions for safer speed limits have a chance to pilot their methodology in member countries of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with $10,000–$20,000 in potential consultancy with ADB through the AI for Safer Roads Innovation Challenge.

ADB organized the challenge in collaboration with the World Bank Development Impact Group, the Asia–Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and AI for Good, with support from the ADB Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific and the High-Level Technology Fund.

The challenge invites participants to combine artificial intelligence (AI) with mobility and geospatial data to identify risky speed limits. In 2021, more than 694,000 people died on roads in Asia and the Pacific. Southeast Asia carries a disproportionate share—motorcycle riders and pedestrians at highest risk in Indonesia, Viet Nam, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Open globally to teams of up to five, this initiative will have participants develop models that assess whether speed limits align with safe system principles, flag dangerous road segments, and produce a speed safety score and a map-based visualization. Finalists will receive mentoring from ADB, the World Bank, and ITU road safety specialists, and will have access to ADB's enterprise GIS environment to further refine their solutions.

Apart from the pilot funding from ADB, the challenge winner and runner-up will receive cash prizes of CHF 600 ($767) and CHF 400, respectively, from ITU and AI for Good. The team with the top solutions will have the potential opportunity to work with transport and road safety experts from ADB in one or more member countries.

The deadline for the application is 25 June 2026. For more information, visit the AI for Safer Roads Innovation Challenge website.
