Before the pandemic, travel in Asia and the Pacific was booming, with international arrivals growing from 208 million visitors in 2010 to 360 million in 2019. But due to the crisis, arrivals plunged a cumulative 95.3% from January to July 2021, the biggest decline in international arrivals globally, compared to the same period in 2019.
This report outlines key trends in the tourism sector in the region before the outbreak and during the pandemic from early 2020 to the end of 2021. It draws on pre-pandemic trends and early crisis responses for insight into how the sector is likely to evolve and recommends how governments can foster recovery in the sector.
