This report shows how the Lao PDR can boost food security by strengthening agricultural value chains, supporting rural areas, and scaling up food systems.

More than 10% of households in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is short of food.

Food insecurity can be caused by environmental, social, political, or economic factors, all exacerbated by conflict. Developments since 2020 have disrupted global supply chains and driven up prices for food and fuel. These developments, combined with macroeconomic instability, climate change risks, reduced biodiversity, and declining productivity growth, make a perfect storm for food insecurity.

This report shows how the Lao PDR can boost food security by strengthening agricultural value chains, supporting rural areas, and scaling up nutrition-centered food systems to improve health and eliminate hunger. It looks at food security across six pillars—availability, accessibility, utilization, stability, agency, and sustainability—and highlights issues including low agricultural productivity, inadequate infrastructure, and gender inequality. The report shows how integrated solutions that mitigate the impacts of climate change, improve rural services, and boost agricultural productivity can support the resilient food systems needed for sustainable development.
