The Asian Development Bank (ADB) supported the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Surveillance Process (1998) and the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum (2004) in response to the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Reforms instituted then have strengthened the fundamentals of the banking system, protecting the region during the global financial crisis in 2008 and beyond.
