Asian Regional Expert Meeting on Development, Disasters and Catastrophes

Venue: ISEAS Seminar Room 1 and 2
Organizers: ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute and OECD Development Centre
Date and time
25 - 26 April 2023
09:50 am - 04:30 pm GMT+8

Countries in Asia and the Pacific are highly exposed to natural hazards, and the exposure is increasing. For instance, recent data shows that occurrence of disasters in Asia and the Pacific for the 23 year-period of 2000–2022 increased by about 90% compared to the previous 23-year period (EM-DAT database). Reducing catastrophic risk is vital for development in countries in the region.

The Asian Regional Expert Meeting on Development, Disasters and Catastrophes provides opportunities to discuss policy priorities, analytical approaches and data challenges. It contributes to narrowing the gap between policy research and practical policy implementation in disaster mitigation and response.

Collaboration among people with different backgrounds can build useful platforms to exchange views and strengthen policy dialogue on how to mitigate disaster risks at the regional level. This platform also promotes networking between research and the policy decision makers in Asia and Pacific economies with the hope of spurring further dialogue beyond the events.
Discussions will cover the following.

• Disaster risk financing and insurance
• Near-term and long-term challenges toward disaster resilient growth
• Disasters and supply chain
• Budgetary frameworks and fiscal measures in disasters
• Development, institutional framework, and governance in disasters
• Disasters and climate change

This hybrid event is open to the public and will be held at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute.
